‘ “With regret, Sir,” says Goodsby, “I have not the charisma of a preacher,” he paused and lowered his voice, “nor quite the conviction.”

“Conviction?” says I, “What do you mean by that?” His voice went even lower and he avoided my eyes.

“Well, Sir, consider such concepts as the immaculate conception, transubstantiation and the Holy Trinity.”

“What about them?”

“Well, Sir, while they may be noble concepts, who can believe them as fact?”

“What?” says I, “What?” I couldn’t have been more surprised if he’d declared loyalty to France and sung the Marseillaise. “What’s the matter with you? You’re Ship’s Chaplain! Don’t you believe in God and the Devil and all that?’

“Ahem,” says he. Just that and nothing more.’
